WordPress Title Tags

A WordPress title tag is a great way to use Search Engine Optimization to make sure your website gets found quickly and easily online for those web users who might be looking for a blog or website similar to yours. The WordPress title tags can help set you apart from other websites that are competing in the rankings compared to your website.

WordPress title tags are part of doing your search engine optimization (SEO) for your WordPress website or blog.  This article offers a definition of title tags and explains how to create title tags.  Keep reading to learn how WordPress title tags can help your site get recognized by the search engines.

What Is a Title Tag?

In HTML and XHTML, a title tag is the tag that defines the title in three circumstances:

  • in the bar at the top of the window above browser tabs and the toolbar;
  • when the page is added to a user’s favorites (though the user can edit it there, and is more likely to do so if it is long); and
  • when the page is displayed in search engine results.

For these reasons, it is a good idea to:

  1. create a title tag for each web page;
  2. differentiate the title tags for each of your web pages; and
  3. keep your title tag short and to the point.

How Title Tags Are Constructed in General

The title tag is part of the head of the page. Thus, it appears inside the head tag. In both HTML and XHTML, it is a toggle tag. This means it has an on and an off tag enclosing it. So, for example, if the title of your blog is “Burning Grapefruit,” the code would look like this:

<html>

<head>

<title>Burning Grapefruit</title>

</head>

How Title Tags Are Constructed in WordPress

The default for WordPress title tags is to display the blog name follwed by the » character followed by the post name. The blog’s name is pulled from bloginfo, and the PHP looks like this, where ‘name’ represents the post name:

<title><?php bloginfo('name'); ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>

If your post name was Grapefruit Flambé, then the PHP would look like this:

<title><?php bloginfo('Grapefruit Flambé'); ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>

and the title at the top of the browser window would look like this:

Burning Grapefruit » Grapefruit Flambé

It is possible to make a variety of changes to the appearance of the title, for example:

  • turn off the » symbol
  • substitute a pipe separator | for the »
  • substitute a dash – for the »
  • substitute a comma , for the »
  • substitute a space for the »
  • reverse the relative position of the blog and the post title, placing the post title first and the blog title second

Double dashes and underscores are not recommended as separators.

Other Approaches to Title Tags

WordPress themes may provide different types of access to title tags.  There are also a variety of title tag WordPress plug-ins. Using either of these its likely to provide added functionality so that the user can replace/override post titles in your title tags, since the parameters for post title and title tags are somewhat different and post titles may not make good title tags. If you consider adding a plug-in, make sure that it is compatible with the version of WordPress you are using, and if you are not using the latest version of WordPress, (3.2.1, as of July 2011), this is a good time to consider upgrading.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

What is search engine optimization? This is a question that every WordPress blog owner should know and understand the answer to because it is so important to use SEO tools and techniques on your WordPress blog to maximize the amount of exposure your blog gets on a search engine.

For any new website, knowing and understanding the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is vital to making sure your site gets lots of web traffic. Search engine optimization is a useful tool that can help your site be one of the top searched.

Search engines are one of the top ways those who use the Internet find websites for the area of interest they are searching. The search engine provides a comprehensive directory that narrows the results according to key words or topics. However with so many web sites available on the web, it can be difficult to narrow down these results. For anyone who has ever used Google or Yahoo! or a similar search engine to search for a particular topic or website, there can often be thousands of websites to wade through.  Most Internet users do not want to take the time to search through each and every result. That is why it is important to make sure your website is one of the top results found on the results page of a search engine. To do this, you need to know and understand the tool of search engine optimization.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Everyone wants high rankings of their website. It can be extremely competitive, which is why SEO is a great tool to use to ensure this happens for your website. Search engine optimization works by ensuring that your web sites are accessible to search engines and are focused in a certain way to make sure they have a higher chance of being discovered by the search engine. With SEO, you can build  your website to help ensure it will rank high in the results of the search engines.

How to use SEO:

In order to use SEO techniques, you have to understand how it works. There are a couple different types of search engines that all work in different ways. Depending on how they work, the SEO techniques might change. With crawler-based search engines, like Google, the listings are created automatically with the results found by a “spider” that “crawls” through the web to find the sites with the highest key words or best information on a certain topic. Those are the results that are ranked the highest on that type of search engine. With human-powered directories, you search using a description of what you are looking for rather than a keyword. These sites are then reviewed with the highest reviewed also receiving the highest ranking. There are also hybrid search engines that are a mixture of crawler and human based directories. These are the most common types of search engines now like Bing. SEO takes into consideration how these particular search engines work, what people are searching for and how the searches are phrased.

When it comes to using SEO with your website, it usually involves editing the content and coding content to increase the relevance of the information based on what is being search on the search engines. The website may need more keywords added to articles, links, titles and other locations throughout the website. The SEO tactics are essentially integrated into the website development and design of the website. One thing to be weary of when incorporating these SEO practices is to not over saturate your website with excessive keywords to try and manipulate your rankings. When this happens, the search engine will flag it as spam and will not include your website in with the rest of the results or will put it to the bottom of the list.

Other SEO tips:

  • Cross linking between websites is a great way to increase your website visibility on the web because it is generating traffic to more than one page.
  • Updating content regularly is also an essential part of increasing the prominence of your website. This helps keep your material fresh and more likely to be searched.
  • Sometimes keywords or topics can get really competitive and it is unlikely your site will be found amidst the competition. Choosing unique topics or keywords that aren’t as competitive to use on your website is a great way to increase web traffic to your site via search engine results.
  • Useful tools like Google Adwords PageRank is a great way to find what search results and competition the keywords are getting. That way you can get a good idea to figure out what keywords would work best on your website.

It might take some trial and error using these tips to eventually decide what works best for your website. Because there are so many different ways to ensure high ranking on a search engine, it all depends on the type of website you have to employ the best SEO tactics. Do what works best for you to get the highest results you can on the web to increase web traffic to your web page.

Best WordPress Plugins for SEO

When you are looking to find the best WordPress plugins for SEO, it is important to choose the best SEO plugins because you can make sure the SEO works to get your website the attention it deserves on various search engines like Google. The best WordPress Plugins for SEO are some of the best tools for your WordPress blog.

Finding the best wordpress plugins for search engine optimization (SEO) is a hard task, but we have taken the hard work out of the situation for you! I’ve used tons of WordPress plugins over the last few years and these are the best.  These plugins will help your site climb to the top of Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

1. All in One SEO Pack– this plugin lets you define the homepage title, meta description, and meta keywords for your site.  It also lets you define the page titles for just about every type of archive/search page for categories, pages, tags, and more. It’s a great SEO tool so you don’t have duplicate title tags in your site.  Perhaps the best part of the plugin is that it includes the nofollow attribute for certain types of search pages like archive & tag. This way the search engines don’t index search pages that might end up in duplicate content.

2. Homepage Excerpts – this one is great for websites that want to avoid putting the entire post on the homepage and archive pages, category searches, and tag pages. This let’s you define how many words to display from the post as an excerpt which is great if you don’t use the custom excerpt feature. I have imported a few blogs from blogger and those don’t come along with a custom excerpt in the post – and one of the blogs has over 700 posts! So I can’t exactly go back and write a custom excerpt for all those posts anytime soon. This is the perfect fix for this.

3. Akismet– a lot of people think this is the best wordpress plugin altogether.  Akismet WordPress plug filters spam comments. This is free to personal site users and Automattic charges a small fee to business users. Why is Akismet plugin good for SEO? If you have comments set loose in moderation tactics – you need something like this. This way you won’t have non-topic comments coming into your blog that will dilute your page’s keyword density. It will also save you time so you can focus on getting more high quality links to your site and posting quality content.

4. Google XML SiteMaps– this is pretty straightforward. If you have a Google Webmaster Account – you’ll want this feature. It will generate a sitemap which you can include in your site and post to your google account to ensure better and deeper spidering of your content. Google will also check on how often this is updated so they can spider quicker. With the new Google Instant feature in search fresh content is more and more important – you need to make sure Google/Yahoo/MSN get to your content faster.

5. Meta Robots WordPress Plugin– another great WordPress plugin for SEO. The meta robots plugin allows you to stop the search engines from indexing your images, any kind of archive pages, and certain links on your homepage.  It can also prevent the indexing of your private pages like the login page for your WordPress admin area.

These are just a few of the favorites that you can count on to SEO your WordPress blog. These are the best WordPress plugins for SEO that I have found, but I’m not quite done looking! I’ll keep you posted on other plugins for various functions in SEO as I find them.

WordPress Title Tags & Blog Optimization

When you are writing the content for your WordPress blog, it is also important to remember WordPress title tags and blog optimization. Ensuring that your blog gets found by readers out there despite all of the other blogging competition is important and can be done by using the best title tags to ensure optimization of your blog.

Writing good title tags is a key element to good search engine rankings.  Optimize your WordPress blog with a few simple tips. We’ll also answer questions about the function of WordPress title tags, how title tags affect users, and how to edit title tags in the WordPress blog software.

What are Title Tags?

Title tags are a function/part of HTML.  It is called a HTML tag & this tag contains the topic of the content of HTML documents.  WordPress title tags are an important part of WordPress blog optimization so writing good titles is crucial to the success of your blog or website.

How do WordPress Title Affect Users?

Your WordPress title tags affect users in many ways. The title tags can determine the user’s navigation pattern on the website/blog. If you don’t write good title tags users will wonder around looking for information and eventually leave if they can’t find it. This would be a result of bad title tags not describing the content and confusing users.  Title tags are diplayed to users in the category pages, archive pages, and the tag searches.  If these don’t convey good information – people won’t like your website! So make sure these are accurate, clear, and concise.

Where are WordPress Title Tags Located?

WordPress title tags are located in the <HEAD> part of the HTML code. This is hidden to the user normally, but the WordPress blog software pulls these into certain documents. If a HTML document doesn’t display the title tags on the web page – you’ll be able to see them in the top of the web browser (in Internet Explorer you would see this at the very top in the blue bar).

How do Search Engines View Title Tags?

Search Engines such as Google view/store HTML documents with “web spiders” which is a software program built to save HTML documents for the purpose of organizing the information to be presented to users who query their search database.  The web spiders, such as Googlebot, see the document and not all these documents display it on the page, but they display it in the code.  Google then organized the document and presents it the search engine user and displayed with the Title in a blue link – then the meta description below (more on meta descriptions later). Google ranks documents higher if they have a quality title tag that is relevant to the content on the page (there are many elements that affect search ranking and this is one of them).

Tips on Writing a Good Title Tag:

  1. Limit your title tag to approx 55 characters – if you need more that’s ok, but search engines don’t care about anything longer than 55 characters. If it’s important that user’s see more than 55 characters in the WordPress title tags – then do it. Don’t get too carried away.
  2. Use important keywords in the title. Avoid things like: “this page is about…” or “information and data on…”. Use actual keywords that are relevant to the content. If the content is location specific data – mention that. If the content is product specific – mention the name.
  3. Use keywords in the title that people will search for. Don’t only write for search engines, but think to yourself – if someone is going to look for my page – how would they search for it. You can look on the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool – which is provided by AdWords.  Search this tool for general terms that relate to you content and then try to see which best suits your content balancing how many times people search for it. Then mention the same phrase in your content for maximum effect.
  4. Only use title tags that are related to content. If your page is about online gambling or pharmacy ads – don’t try to trick search engines and users by labeling something it’s not. This is not an ethical practice in the web industry – it’s considered “black hat SEO”.  Does this item seem redundant…well it’s that important!

How to Change WordPress Title Tags?

You can easily change WordPress title tags by clicking on Posts in the admin area. Then edit a post. You can edit the page title at anytime to optimize. You may not want to update the permalink because this may break certain links to the page. Newer versions of WordPress will automatically redirect requests to your page if it uses the old permalink to the new URL.

How to Customize Title Tags in the WordPress Code?

Well…I’ll tell you in a future post. There is a lot more to cover if you’re looking to edit the html/php code of the WordPress software.
